Asphalt Calculator
Estimates short tons of hot-mix asphalt for a driveway or parking lot
Updated May 28, 2026 · Live
What this tool does
Estimates the short tons of hot-mix asphalt (HMA) needed to pave a driveway or parking lot at a specified compacted depth and density.

How the asphalt calculator works
Multiply paved area by laid (compacted) depth to get volume, then multiply by the compacted density of the mix to get short tons. Multiply tons by the supplier rate per ton for an indicative cost. Every figure is an estimate — site conditions and the specific mix design will move the final number.
Typical US asphalt depths and densities
Residential driveways commonly use a 2–3 in lift of HMA over a compacted aggregate base; commercial parking lots use thicker sections (3–4 in surface course over a binder course). Dense-graded HMA typically compacts to 145–150 lb/ft³; open-graded mixes sit lower. Your supplier will quote the specific density for the mix you order — adjust the density input accordingly.
What this tool does not do
It does not size the aggregate base, factor edge construction, replace a professional quote, assess structural adequacy for vehicle loads, or confirm code compliance. Those remain the responsibility of a suitably qualified designer, engineer, or your local building official.
Permits and stormwater
Driveway approaches that tie into a public street typically need a permit from the local public works department. Many jurisdictions also limit impermeable surface coverage or require stormwater capture (permeable pavement, a French drain to a dry well, or a bioswale) under municipal stormwater rules. Setback and slope requirements vary by code.
Code and compliance
Stormwater from a driveway must not flow uncontrolled onto the public street in most jurisdictions. Check the locally adopted IRC/IBC amendments plus any municipal stormwater ordinance for the specific limits in your area.
Before you order
Cross-check the calculator's output against a supplier quote — pricing assumptions, mix specification (Superpave designation, NMAS) and density vary between suppliers. Ask for the specific mix (for example a 9.5 mm Superpave surface course under AASHTO M323), the compacted density the supplier assumes, and confirm delivery and laying timescales against your schedule.
Adjusting the defaults
Every input in this calculator is editable. Enter your own area, depth, density and price — the output recalculates instantly. If the defaults feel off for your project, your own numbers always override them.

Sources & methodology
Short tons = (Area in ft² × Compacted depth in ft × Compacted density in lb/ft³) ÷ 2,000. Defaults assume a typical US driveway specification of a 2 in lift at 148 lb/ft³; every input is editable. Indicative cost = tons × price per ton.
Frequently asked questions
Are asphalt calculator results accurate enough to order materials?
Use them as a starting estimate only. Verifying the final quantity with your supplier or contractor before ordering is good practice — site conditions, wastage and cut-offs all affect the true figure.
What compacted density should I use?
Dense-graded hot-mix asphalt typically compacts to 145–150 lb/ft³. The calculator defaults to 148 lb/ft³, which suits most US driveway and parking lot specifications. Your supplier will confirm the figure for the specific Superpave mix you order — enter that value for the closest estimate.
Does this replace professional advice?
No. This tool is a planning estimator. For work that affects structure, building code compliance, gas, electrical, plumbing, or drainage to a public sewer, consult a licensed contractor or design professional.
Can I change the unit prices?
Yes — every price field is editable. Plug in your supplier's quote to get a total that matches your project.
