How the compost calculator works

The calculator takes the bed area, the depth of compost, and a price per tonne, applies the standard volume-to-weight relation, and returns the tonnes, bulk bags and an indicative cost. Every figure is an estimate — site conditions always move the final number.

How much compost and how deep

For mulching borders, a 40–50 mm layer over the soil surface is typical; for improving a bed before planting, compost is usually dug into the top 100–150 mm. Veg patches are often topped up each season as the previous dressing breaks down into the soil. Compost is loose and settles after spreading, so a freshly laid depth beds down over the first few weeks.

What this tool does not do

It does not replace a professional quote or factor regional pricing. It estimates a quantity and an indicative cost from the area, depth and price entered; the supplier's stated coverage or bag volume remains the basis for a specific product.

On-site considerations for compost

Compost is bulky but light, so a small bed can still need a surprising number of bags. Bulk deliveries arrive loose or in bulk bags and need somewhere to tip; bagged compost is easier to move through a house or side passage. Fresh, strong compost is usually left to mellow before seed is sown directly into it.

Compost types and quality

Multipurpose, soil-conditioner and peat-free composts differ in density and nutrient content, so the loose density used here is a typical figure rather than a product-specific one. Peat-free composts are now the norm for Canadian retail. The volume printed on the bag is the most reliable basis for a specific product.

Before you order

Compost is sold loose by the tonne or cubic metre, in 0.8-tonne bulk bags, and in retail bags of around 50 litres. Larger beds tend to work out cheaper bought loose or in bulk bags, while a single border may only need a few retail bags. Cross-checking the calculator’s output against a supplier quote helps catch differences in pricing assumptions, since loose density and bag volume vary between products.

Adjusting the defaults

Every input in this calculator is editable. Enter your own bed area, compost depth and price per tonne — the output recalculates instantly. If a default does not match your project, your own numbers always override it.

Frequently asked questions

Are compost calculator results accurate enough to order materials?

Use them as a starting estimate only. Verifying the final quantity with your supplier or contractor before ordering is good practice — site conditions, wastage and cut-offs all affect the true figure.

How deep should the compost layer be?

For mulching borders, 40–50 mm over the surface is typical; for improving a bed before planting, compost is usually dug into the top 100–150 mm. Entering the depth that matches the job sets the volume and tonnage in proportion. This tool applies no separate wastage allowance, so adding a little to the depth or area gives a margin if you want one.

Does this replace professional advice?

No. This tool is a planning estimator. For works that affect structure, the National Building Code (NBC), property-line or shared-wall, gas, electrics, drainage to a sewer, or similar, consult a suitably qualified professional.

Can I change the unit prices?

Yes — every price field is editable. Plug in your supplier's quote to get a total that matches your project.
