How the driveway sealcoat calculator works

This calculator multiplies the driveway area by the number of coats, divides by the coverage rate to get the litres of sealer, then divides by the pail size and rounds up to whole pails. Coverage drops on a rough or porous surface, so the first coat usually goes further than the second.

Sealing an asphalt driveway

Sealcoating protects asphalt from UV, water and freeze-thaw, and refreshes the colour. Clean and dry the surface, fill cracks first, and apply thin coats. Two thin coats wear better than one thick one. Sealer is for asphalt only — concrete driveways use a different concrete sealer.

Timing and conditions

Apply when the pavement and air are both above about 10°C with at least 24 hours of dry weather ahead, ideally out of direct midday sun. Fresh asphalt needs to cure for several months before its first seal.

What this tool does not do

It estimates sealer quantity only. It does not assess whether the driveway needs crack filling, patching or resurfacing first, and it is not a substitute for a paving contractor’s inspection on a failing surface.

Adjusting the defaults

Every input is editable. Enter your own area, coverage, coats and pail size and the litres, pails and cost recalculate instantly.

On-site considerations

Sweep and wash the driveway, treat oil spots with a primer, and fill cracks over about 6 mm before you seal — sealer is a coating, not a filler. Cut in the edges with a brush and pull the body with a squeegee or sprayer in thin, even coats. Keep traffic off for the cure time on the label, usually 24–48 hours, and avoid sealing in fall once overnight temperatures drop.

Using this alongside other BuildMetricLab tools

Sources & methodology

Calculates sealer volume as the driveway area times the number of coats, divided by the coverage per litre, then divides by the pail size and rounds up. Every result is calculated from the values you enter, and all inputs are editable.

Frequently asked questions

Are deck stain / sealer calculator results accurate enough to order materials?

Use them as a starting estimate only. Verifying the final quantity with your supplier or contractor before ordering is good practice — site conditions, wastage and cut-offs all affect the true figure.

What wastage percentage should I use?

The calculator defaults to the typical Canadian trade allowance for painting & decorating. Increase it for complex cuts, awkward shapes, or first-time DIY. The default wastage allowance reflects common trade practice; values lower than the default may underestimate offcuts.

Does this replace professional advice?

No. This tool is a planning estimator. For works that affect structure, the National Building Code (NBC), property-line or shared-wall, gas, electrics, drainage to a sewer, or similar, consult a suitably qualified professional.

Can I change the unit prices?

Yes — every price field is editable. Plug in your supplier's quote to get a total that matches your project.
